Why Does Google Put Phone Numbers Under Review
Google's automated systems flag phone number changes as a trust and quality check. This is especially common when:
- You have recently changed your phone number to a new SIM or business line
- The number you added is a mobile number rather than a landline
- Your listing has had multiple edits in a short period
- The number is already associated with another Google Business Profile
- Google's spam detection algorithm flagged the change
This review process usually takes 3 to 7 business days for legitimate businesses. However some listings can get stuck for weeks — especially if the listing has other unresolved issues.
Step-by-Step Fix for Phone Number Under Review
Step 1 — Do not edit the listing again immediately. Making more edits while a review is pending can restart the clock or trigger additional flags. Leave the profile alone for at least 3 full business days first.
Step 2 — Verify your Business Profile is verified. Go to Google Business Profile Manager. If your listing shows Pending Verification alongside the phone review, that is your primary issue. Complete verification first via postcard, phone or video.
Step 3 — Check for duplicate listings. Search Google Maps for your business name. If you find a duplicate listing with the same phone number, Google may be flagging the conflict. Request removal of the duplicate via Suggest an Edit.
Step 4 — Contact Google Business Profile Support directly. Go to support.google.com/business, click Contact us, select Edit information on my profile, then choose Phone number or website. Explain that your number has been under review for more than 7 days. Attach a screenshot of the current listing status.
Step 5 — Post in the Google Business Profile Help Community. The Google Business Profile Help Community has Product Experts who can escalate stuck review cases directly to Google's backend team. Post your issue with your Business Profile URL, category, and how long the number has been under review.
Step 6 — Add a secondary phone number while waiting. In your Business Profile, you can add additional phone numbers. Add your main working number as a secondary number — this will display immediately while the primary number completes review.
How Long Does the Review Actually Take
In most cases, legitimate phone number changes are approved within 3 to 7 business days. However:
- New businesses listed less than 6 months ago — can take 7 to 14 days
- Previously flagged listings — 2 to 4 weeks in some cases
- Competitive categories like legal, medical, financial — longer review timelines due to higher spam rates in these sectors
If your number has been under review for more than 14 days without resolution, it almost certainly requires a manual support ticket or community escalation.
How to Prevent This From Happening Again
Once resolved, here is how to avoid the under review status for future edits:
- Use a consistent phone number across all online platforms — your website, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART and social media should all show the same number
- Avoid making multiple edits to your Business Profile in a short time window
- If you must change your number, do it as a single isolated edit and do not touch the profile for a week afterwards
- Ensure your Google Business Profile is fully verified before making any changes
- Keep your profile active with weekly posts and photo uploads — active listings receive less scrutiny from Google's automated systems
A phone number stuck under review usually resolves within a week. If it has been more than 14 days, you need to contact Google support directly or get a GMB expert to escalate it for you.
